White: Kg1, Qe3, Bb1, Be1, Nc4, Pa2, Pb4, Pf5, Pg2, Ph2. Black: Kg8, Qe7, Bb7, Bg7, Nd7, Pa6, Pb6, Pf7, Pg6, Ph7. Solution. Black plays, 1. ... Bd4, pinning the white queen to the king. If, 2. Qxd4 Qxe1+, is mate. Tactical tools and warnings. X-ray attack - The black queen is x-raying the white e1 bishop through the white e3 queen. Pin - The black bishop moves to d4, pinning the white queen to her king. Deflection - The white queen is deflected from the e-file permitting the black queen to capture the white e1 bishop. Diagonal vulnerability - The white king and queen are sitting on a diagonal of the colour of the black g7 bishop. Back rank weakness - The white king on g1 is vulnerable to a checkmate pattern of the black queen landing on the e1 square. * * * ## How to checkmate with king and rook against king.
