Newbie help with making Crafty play stronger?

I'm not very good with writing/understanding programs and such so I need some help with configuring Crafty17.9 to make it play stronger. I read the readme file and the FAQ but I have a difficult time following. I'd like to know how to set hash tables and table bases (I'm assuming these allow for Crafty to play stronger), give Crafty a more "complete" opening book, and offer it some common endgame possibilities (I read that Crafty can predict mate in 30? I'd like to know how). I'm using Crafty with the Winboard engine. Also, if there is a winboard engine that is decidedly stronger than Crafty's, I'd like to know about it. Any help is truly appreciated. Thanks!

The easiest way to control the strength of Crafty is through the adjustment of a configuration file. The configuration file must have the name Crafty.rc (no other file extensions) and consist of certain commands. My Crafty.rc consist of the following commands:
hash 12M
hashp 4M
cache 2M
drawscore=0
log off
ponder off
book on
book random 1
book width 5
learn 7
resign 5
tbpath=c:\Tb
egtb
exit
The commands is explained in the documentation you've got. If you don't use tablebases then you can omit cache, tbpath and egtb. The most "complete" book can be found at the website of Dr. Hyatt, book.bin, and used with bookc.bin and books.bin.
I hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Mogens

You could also try crafty1710..Though it's not much stronger..
Download and use all the available TBS including some of the 6 pieces,
get a high end computer and
maybe contribute to the crafty learning file by emailing Dr Hyatt the Book.lrn file..

Actually with the tablebases, at the moment you'd probably want to not get the 6pc Tablebases yet, because you'll need around 7Gb space just to get all the 3,4,&5 pc tablebases, and there's really only a few 6pc. as it is, and you'll have to get a special download of Crafty (Dann Corbit has one) to use the 6pc tablebases.
Where Mogens has pondering off in his crafty.rc file, you'll gain more strength with Crafty by turning Crafty's pondering on than you will by downloading massive amounts of tablebases. But at least getting all the 3&4pc tablebases is a good idea in any case.
But if you have 2 Gb space, this is the collection of TBs that Scrappy uses:

Actually I'm not certain how much better Crafty plays with TBs.. Seems to me that for the 3 piece and 4 piece Tbs, usually crafty can handle it well enough if it has sufficent time..But it sure helps in Blitz.
Having said this, some positions like KBN vers K or weird KR vers KB positions it's nice to have TBs..But many of the five pieces TB sure look useful..Including weird ones like KBB vers KN..
