Why, RIVAL, why ?

Postby Carlo E.A.Drake » 13 Sep 1999, 20:51

I'm not testing with RIVAL. Why? The SETUP always answer me DFX SETUP alert!
EXECUTABLE CORRUPT! POSSIBLY A VIRUS! ... and not let me install the program.
I try with 1.8.11, 1.8.14 and 1.8.16, and... nothing of else
HELP!

On a related note, I had NewRival on my computer for a while, but I decided to get rid of it. But uninstall did not work, so I had to deltree the foul thing off my computer. Now I'm going to have to go into the registry and pick little pieces of Rival out of there. I'm not ammused and I won't be installing Rival again.
I fail to see the reason for programs needing a setup or install to get them working. I have the same complaint about Arasan, but at least Arasan allowed me to uninstall it.
My feeling is that all that is needed is unzipping a file into a directory as far as Winboard programs go, and in the future I won't be trying any Winboard programs that have their own setup program.

Rival is one of the very few programs i have a positive score against.
And that is 1-0.
After defeating it in an ultra-short blitz-game (even though the grafics sucks) I deleted it imediately, well: I tried to delete it.
There should be a warning in the engine-"Übersicht" about this.

it's a glaring flaw in Rival

I'll probably allways hold a grudge against Rival because of this now, that's part of the reason I won't allow Winboard engines to run a setup program anymore.

OK, I will test Rival again. This will take some days. After the test I will inform you here.
BTW: I have never found a virus in any chess programm. I'm using several virus scanners(always newest versions).
Best wishes
