Averno 0.18b

Postby José Carlos » 27 Sep 1999, 19:41

Hello everybody. I'm the programmer of Averno.
First, I want to say that there's a new realease of my program available (see Frank's page).
I want to explain a couple of things that I've already explained on CCC:
This is my first approach to chess programming. When I decided to write a chess program, I had two possibilities: use any available source as a starting point, and make a strong program quickly or write every single line of code by myself, without even taking a look at other programs.
Why did I choose the second option? Well, I think it's more important to learn everything step by step, from the very beggining, although knowing that my program would be very weak; at least, firts versions.
But that's my choice. I want to understand every single improvement I make to my program, and so, each game my program wins, is my victory, just mine, because I copied nothing from anywhere.
So, if you're looking for a strong program, please don't download Averno. But if you want a honest program, mine is indicated.
Best regards,
José C.

Hello Jose
I like your choose, to develop from scratch. :))
It is much harder, but you get a own, new program.
Don´t worry about worse playing strength at the beginning!
If you work on it, you will improve fast. And it is much more fun to see the improvements come...
Second, you are "in control of your code", what is most!! important.
If you have your working program, you maybe want to have a look, how others do it. IMHO thats ok. But don´t copy the lines, get ideas (you must not invent everything new)
Happy to see you in the "club" :))
Werner
P.S: I did the same way with Inmichess, starting at about 1500 ELO....

Thanks you both (gracias a los dos).
I'm working hard on Averno, and I see a little improvement every day (estoy trabajando duro en Averno, y veo pequeñas mejoras cada día).
Now I'm improving the Hash table and I'll soon build the oppenings book (ahora estoy mejorando la tabla Hash, y pronto tendré disponible el libro de aperturas).
