Hello Djordje and Alexandre,
over night I play a little match !
AnMon 5.01 - SOS (03.11.1999) 5,0 : 13,0
AMD K6-3 450 MHz
ponder = off
5-pieces Nalimov
32 MB for Hash
I play many games with SOS (60 moves in 10 minutes) and I can not say that the old version is better !
Of course, I play not enough games !
Kind regards
Frank
Frank,
Alexandre got 0.5-9.5 for Anmon 5.01 against the new version of SOS! I got terrible scores for the new version on ICC and stopped using it. It got beat almost every time. The older version is better, much better in _my_ opinion. However, your test results are verifiable and I believe you. Therefore the conclusion: we need more games!
Best to you,
Djordje

Alexandre got 0.5-9.5 for Anmon 5.01 against the new version of SOS! I got terrible scores for the new version on ICC and stopped using it. It got beat almost every time. Hello Djordje,
I use the new version from 03.11.99. I think the older version from 25.10. and the test version (without nalimov) from 29.10. (not free) play not stronger.
But of course, I play not enough games.
Kind regards

Djordje, it seems to me that SOS uses a surprisingly large amount of memory. The new version will allocate in addition a lot for table base support (decompression and cache; don't know how much, could be easily a few dozen MB). Furthermore, I suspect that SOS reads its book at start-up time completely into memory. (When using the older version for the 1st time, I noted that the book access was terribly slow. The situation improved after I made more memory available.)
Could it be that you underestimated the memory demands of SOS ? This could be a reason for the poor performance of the new version, which will use even far more than the older one.
Greetings, Uli
Uli Türke

Hi Djordje, hi Frank,
I played 146 blitz games (game in 5 minutes) with SoS (03.11.1999) with 5-men tablebases...
PentiumIII-500 256MB Ram
Here the results:
- SoS - Insomniac 0.58 = 39,0 - 33,0
- SoS - Crafty 17.1 = 08,5 - 11,5
- SoS - Zarkov 4.5h = 16,0 - 38,0
I don't see, that the newer version is weaker than the older one.
best regards,
Chrsitain

Alexandre got 0.5-9.5 for Anmon 5.01 against the new version of SOS! I got terrible scores for the new version on ICC and stopped using it. It got beat almost every time. The older version is better, much better in _my_ opinion. However, your test results are verifiable and I believe you. Therefore the conclusion: we need more games!
Best to you,
Djordje
I don't understand this phenomenon. I've played a match with 30 games at slower time controls with Crafty16.19 and the newer SOS. SOS made a good job. See my postings here some days ago.
Best wishes

Hello Djordje and Alexandre,
over night I play a little match !
AnMon 5.01 - SOS (03.11.1999) 5,0 : 13,0
AMD K6-3 450 MHz
ponder = off
5-pieces Nalimov
32 MB for Hash
I play many games with SOS (60 moves in 10 minutes) and I can not say that the old version is better !
Of course, I play not enough games !
Kind regards
Frank

Hello Uli,
Nice to hear from you, as always. Anyway, I think that I have noticed the same thing: SOS _does_need lots of memory (usually takes up to about 75% of system resources). However, I have 128MB RAM and that should suffice. There might be something else that I am not aware of, but then again the bad scores that I got could be due to statistical randomness, why not? Anyway, I will keep a very watchful eye on SOS and its both versions. Thank you guys: Volker, Frank, Christian Koch and Uli for discussing the issue. And, last but not least, thanks for Christian Liebert for having a good enough wish to help.
Best,
Djordje
