Best tweakings of engines for a 'human style'?

Postby Francesco Di Tolla » 03 Sep 1999, 13:16

Hi folks, nice this new forum!
Now what are the best tweaking for winborad engines? E.g. does goliath play more 'human like' with a higher selectivity?
What about other interesting tweaking for other engines?
regards

That probably depends on what you mean by human. I would call Goliath a bit of an assassin of a human
I'm unclear what you're referring to when you say "higher selectivity". Most engines will let you adjust hash tables, but often nothing else.
Both AnMon and The Crazy Bishop seam rather human like with their tactics, also very likable programs wpuld be Phalanx and Fortress. Fortress Doesn't get mentioned much, it's very strong and to me has very natural seaming moves.

a program that sometimes plays on "speculations" rather than only exact calculations. On the other side also a more precise positional evaluation would be more "human like".
in the ini file the is the possibility to set the selectivity
SELECTIVITY [AUTO, OFF, ON, HIGH]=AUTO

Both ZChess and TCB play very human like chess in my opinion. Comet don't mind sacking a piece for an attack and it's book contains some risky openings, making the chess very dynamic and entertaining.
I've tried to adjust the selectivity, but I didn't play enough games to conclude anything. You can adjust selectivity on the Comet as well (ON or OFF), but I haven't tried.
Best wishes...
