New C.A.P. project "Johnny Walker Takes the Fifth"

Postby Dann Corbit » 29 Sep 1999, 23:04

A new project is brewing...
"Johnny Walker Takes the Fifth..."
Interrogator:
"Well, Mr. Walker, what *are* the weaknesses common to the Scotch?"
Johnny Walker:
{No answer, but small beads of moisture are appearing on his crown...}
Interrogator:
"So you don't feel like talking then. Fine, we'll just have to get nasty then.
Once we start digging around into your background you may not like what starts
to turn up..."
Johnny Walker:
{No answer, but he appears to be glowing a dim shade of red...}
Some musings about the 20K games in the Scotch collection:
Taking the Scotch games out to 15 ply, there are 25,378 distinct positions. Of
these positions, 4,152 were already processed in our database: leaving 21,226
positions yet to process.
Taking the Scotch games out to 20 ply, there are 73,774 distinct positions. Of
these positions, 6,276 were already processed in our database: leaving 67,498
positions yet to process.
Taking the Scotch games out to 25 ply, there are 141,023 distinct positions. Of
these positions, 7,590 were already processed in our database: leaving 133,433
positions yet to process.
{did also 30 & 35 ply, similar progression -- then 40}:
Taking the Scotch games out to 40 ply, there are 373,992 distinct positions. Of
these positions, 8,584 were already processed in our database: leaving 365,408
positions yet to process.
We will either stop at 20 or 25 ply, unless someone can think of a compelling
reason to continue.
Anyone curious about joining the Chess Analysis Project? Read the FAQ. I dare
you. I double-dare you.
