system resources,internet, and programs

Hello,
whenever i play chess over the net for longer than an hour
my computer goes slow and when i check the system resources and it gets
to as low as 50% (starts out at 94% at startup),
so why does it do this and how to resolve this problem??? (other than turning computer off), i put hash file to 2MB ( have 36 MB ram)
It seems as if RAM is getting used up?!?? note i have ample room for a
large swap file ( over 1 GB availlable but only ever uses aroung 20 MB)
