I'm not sure what you're talking about, "pondering"? Pondering does not get shut off automatically if that's what you mean.
When you really think about it, Winboard doesn't really do much of anything automatically. Basically it mostly acts as a gui interface to send i/o signals to your Winboard engines (not such an easy task, very impressive actually) but don't expect Winboard to read your mind, you do have to be carefull that you DO tell it what you want it to do, because Winboard is just waiting for your input on everything.
