I know a lot people aren't so interested in the weaker engines but just in case I wanted to let people know that a new version of DrunkenMaster 0.6 is available from www.geocities.com/prewarski .

You know what would be really cool? If you would include a 'version history' on the website of what changes are in the new version. Some people want to know what techniques you are using, have added, have abandoned.
Actually, this goes for every engine, not just yours. Please add a version history with release dates and major changes and even your thoughts like 'my real job has stolen my attention, so I won't be able to work on the engine as much as I used to', or 'I'm preparing to enter my engine in CCT6', or 'added new opening lines to the book'.
TIA.

I do include a bit of this in the README file included with the download. The version history isn't extremely detailed but it is there. Perhaps I will try to include a link to the README file in the future. Thanks for the input.

Of course we are! That's why we hang around on this board instead of just
CCC. :-)
Thanks for the new version!

For each game played in the tourneys between computers posted here, there were a lot of anonymous games between humans and computers, and we, humans, love to win (which rarely happened...), love to fight and love drunkenmaster.

Thanks for the kind words Tord. I am fan of your engine Gothmog, for a few reasons. When I was first writing DrunkenMaster I called it Smaug, and there are still a few places in the code where the name Smaug lives. Also I like your attempt for style of play. At some point I want to make DrunkenMaster play a very aggressive attacking style but for now there are so many other things to work on to make it stronger that are probably more important. And I see that you use 0x88 , since most strong engines use Bit Boards it is nice to see a good engine that use some 0x88 implementation. Good luck with your engine.

Cool!
I have been thinking about changing the name of my engine, too (perhaps when
it has reached the stage where it feels stable enough to deserve a version
number of 1.0). The name "Gothmog" makes the engine sound much more terrifying
than it acutally is, and I should find a more modest name.
If improving strength is the main goal, I doubt that a very aggressive style
is a good idea. In fact I think the easiest way for me to improve Gothmog
would be to make it less aggressive and more materialistic (which I don't
want to do, at least not yet).
I am surprised that so many amateur engines use bitboards. They seem
much more difficult to implement than simple array-based data structures.
I wish you the same! :-)
