Fischer Random Flag on icc WinBoard 4.3.15j didnt send board

Postby PulsarMike » 15 Feb 2009, 20:51

Fegor on icc running citychicken was playing fischer random using WinBoard 4.3.15j
and in a game winboard did not send the setboard command at the start of the game. there was more funny business in the log because citychickens last move was b8c6 which implied a rook jumping like a knight with the fr board that was existent, winboard played instead d5d4 and then when opponent played g1f3 a move legal in both the normal and current fr board, winboard never sent hte move at all and pulsar hanged.

"examine Mike %45" on icc for game.

Very fishy. I will look into it. It might be that I broke again WinBoards ability to play FRC with black. Does this occur on any game you play with black in ICS mode?

no, in that log the third game against that opponent hanged. i think the log goes back far enough that you can see the 1st game against that opponent citychicken had black and it did not hang and won ( through opponents resignation). the hanging game is the last game in log so the other black game if log goes that far back, is third game back. fegor gave me the log.

One thing i noticed is initial posion in that game was funny with rook on b1 king on c1 and rook on d1. when i think about this the king cannot castle queen side wihout losing its king side castling rights first since it needs to move the d1 rook to allow for a queen side castle.. Did the icc give an illegal fr posion here? Maybe this is the nature of fr that you can't neccesarily castle both queen and king side on a move at one time even if you moved every piece but kings and rooks.

Any of the positions with K between R is allowed in FRC. But it should not matter for whether WB sends a setboard or not. The fact that it does not always do that will make it very difficult to trace the source of the problem. It does not help that it is impossible for me to test anything on ICC, as there is never any opponent that accepts a 'match' challenge there, and I have only one ICC account. That is the situation in normal Chess, and for FRC opponents it is still a hundred times worse. And unfortunately, on my return from Belgium, I did not succeed in connecting my laptop to my own WLAN under Ubuntu anymore. The network-settings utility does not even see my hardware anymore, so it is not possible to enter the required WEP key. (The hardware is OK, though, when I boot Windows it runs fine.) So I can no longer run my own ICS either.

Just with regard to the situation with ics play in FR, it is not nearly as bad as shatranj. In fact if you keep a bot on awhile playing fr it will start to get preety steady games i think. I would imagine 5-10 games an hour. I would suggest to optimize chances of games unrated play and a time control slower than 3 0 like 5 0 or 4 2 or something. On ics you can set noautologout 1 to not idle out. But i t hink once you have been on a bit say an hour and people become aware that in FR you wont have such a huge deal getting games. Lots of regular chess players who may not have heard of shatranj are willing to play FR on icc.

oh when i said unrated play i also meant all ratign ranges no formula. i.e. set useformula 0 and then +alias gameend seek 5 0 u w22 0-9999

I find this type of seeking can be very effective for getting games were you want to test stuff that is not related to the playing strenght of the opponent.
