Game navigation with arrow keys - gone!?

Postby vsoljan » 29 Sep 2009, 09:27

Untill Winboard 4.4.0 came out, I used Winboard mod by Alessandro Scotti because I liked it very much. I like Winboard 4.4.0 and it's features, but I really miss navigating through a game with arrow keys (it's simple and fast, no need to mouse click or press two keys e.g. Alt+arrow). Why is this gone from last versions? It's not like those keys are now used for something more usefull, so what was the reason for removing this from Winboard?
Please put those arrow keys back in game navigation (left/right arrow = backward/forward step in game)!
Thanks!

The arrow keys are used in the version for the blind to enter moves. They move the 'active square' over the board. Making the JAWS patch incompatible with the standard version would make it much more difficult to maintain it, and it is not easy to "patch out" accellerator keystrokes once they are defined in the Widows resource.

So I am not sure what could be done, but I will look into it.

Thank you for your quick answer. I was not aware that those keys were used in version for blind people. I guess I will have to use older version or just get used to Alt+arrow or mouse click navigation.

You can use #ifdef JAWS in all the source files, including the .rc file(s) to handle those keys differently.

This might be a good idea then: use an #ifndef JAWS around the definition of the arrow keys as accelerators in winboard.rc/

I'm very pleased to see that winboard is again/still under development. Thanks to everybody involved !!! Using it since years. Would like to use the new 4.4 version, however, as vsaljan I'm desperately missing the old way to navigate.
Can somebody post the fix for windows as suggested by Eric? Unfortunately, this is beyond my computer skills.
thx.

We are working on a 4.4.1 release which will contain this, and might actually be ready for it this weekend.
