Bug with xboard 20100118 (with Zippy code)

Postby rigao » 14 Apr 2010, 15:02

The version number is the one i've got when clicking on "About xBoard". I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 AMD64.

On FICS, and when moving with drag and drop, if your opponent surrenders when you have a piece dragged (and not dropped, because you want to move faster), then the next game you will have that piece already dragged, and any place you click, it will settle there, and maybe the square where it was in the last game will become cleared, so if it was in the first two ranks, it means that not only a ghost piece will appear in the middle of the board, but another one will disappear.

The bug is only visual, as you can move to the square occupied by the ghost piece without problem, and if some of your pieces is invisible, you can move it. At the time either of this things happens, the bug is no longer in effect.

I hope you understand me. When it comes to explain this things, my english is usually not enough.

This seems a manifestation of the ' stale first click' bug that was fixed Feb 7 (so after the version you are using). Could you test if this is indeed solved in later versions? (I cannot test this playing myself on a single computer.)

The bug is still in the xboard master-20100221 (with Zippy code) which I downloaded from the git repository.

How to reproduce it in one's computer:

You start xboard with your favorite engine, at 1/0 (for example). You make your first move, say 1.e4, and the engine answers you, say 1. ... e5. Then you drag 2. d4 but do not drop it! You just have the pawn dragged until your time rans out. After that, you just make new game and you will see that the d2 pawn is missing.

It happens too in the xboard 4.4.4.201100404 + stockfish 1.7.1 (with Zippy code) which is the xboard in Debian Sid repository (by the way, I'm very happy with my Debian Sid :)).

Not sure how they can have this version. It seems from the future, as on my calender it is still 2010, not 2011. And the latest stable release we did is 4.4.3; 4.4.4 is yet to come. If you believe that date, it must have the bugfix, which was added to the Savannah repository Feb 9, 2010. This was after the release of 4.4.2, though...

When I look on the Debian web page for Sid, it features 4.4.2.

Maybe I posted the version number incorrectly. When I log in Debian I will take another look.
