Option Bug

[schooner]

A new bug has appeared in the WB output that never happened before. WB is sending UCI options to a WB engine. It frequently occurs when playing against UCI MadChess, but could also occur with other engines. It also seems to occur after at least one match game has already been played in a tournament. I do not know if this is a polyglot bug. I do not know if this occurs in all WB versions. How can WB be forced to not send UCI commands to WB engine?

Note: Schooner's input function reads null terminated strings. The "option" output might have extra embedded codes that would require a new input handler to parse "option" garbage. This might be fixed by testing more "," delimiter's.

Note: Schooner's input function reads up to seven arguments (for FEN strings). UCI may send more than seven arguments. There is overflow.

This does not look like a WinBoard debug file. Although superficially it has the same line format of a time stamp and </> first/second, the information printed on the line is not as WinBoard would ever do it. For one, the first command sent to the first engine is "uci". WinBoard could never do that; it supports UCI only through an adapter, and would never emit UCI commands itself.

As in the "Loading book" line it mentions a .abk book, (which is the extension in common use by books in the proprietary Arena format), I suspect that it is actually an Arena log.

Apparently Arena sends the second engine options declared by the first engine. Well, I guess this is the sort of thing that gave Arena its reputation.

I am glad to hear the error is Arena's, and not WB or Schooners. I would send the error to Arena, but I am not sure if they have a complaint department. Gabor Szots insists that all CCRL tested engines must be Arena .abk compatible:

Well, Arena debug files show what the engine and Arena do, when you run them together. As WinBoard is not involved in any way in such a test, you can hardly expect it to tell you anything about what WinBoard might or might not do wrong. If anything goes wrong it will be either Arena or the engine's fault. WinBoard can only do something wrong when it it would actually be used...

As for the books, testers (and in particular Gabor) let the GUI handle the book. The engine never gets to see it. So it doesn't matter at all what the book format is (.abk, Polyglot, .cgb...). The only thing that matters is whether the engine is WB-protocol compliant, in particular w.r.t. handling the 'force' command. Only with the aid of that command the GUI can send moves for both sides to the engine, and this is what you need to do when the opening moves come from a book, rather than being thought up by the engine.
