can not load new engine in Xboard 4.5.2

Postby imai » 11 Aug 2011, 15:18

The load new engine function is not working after installation of Crafty 23-4 in Xboard 4.5.2. When I try to use this menu function I get the message " Engine has no options". Other engines like Stockfish, Critter, Fairymax, Predateur etc gave no problems at all.
I use Xboard on a Macbook Pro and the Crafty engine was obtained via this link http://julien.marcel.free.fr/temp/confi ... ty23.4.zip
I don't have another version of Crafty to test this function.
Suggestions are welcome, regards,
teun

The message you quote should be given when you press Engine #N Settings. Not Load Engine (Which does not even exist in XBoard 4.5.2.) And Crafty has no options that can be set through WB protocol, as far as I am aware. So I guess this is normal.

Does it play when you press "Machine White"?

As far as I know I use the Xboard version which is included in the installation package of Darklord42 and that is supposed to be 4.5.2.
Anyway the version I use has the option "load new engine" in menu item "Engines".
The problem occurs when you first select "engine #1 settings" (followed by the info "engine has no options") and then select "load new engine" which gives the same info again and not the normal load new engine screen. So I guess it is a bug in Xboard.

Well, that cannot be a normal 4.5.2. But at least I understand what the problem is now. I will check it out when I boot up Linux again.

OK, I found it. Thanks for reporting. In fact, after using the Engine #N Settings for an engine without options, virtually every menu dialog would pop up that error message, not just Load Engine. I had forgotten to reset the engine number when making this error exit to the normal dialog, with as a result that every new attempt to pop something up was using the list of engine options, in stead of the lists of internal XBoard options for that dialog.

The latest version in hgmaster of my source repository has this fixed now.
