Position Search within a large PGN file?

Postby Anonymous » 12 Sep 2005, 07:03

So I'm interested in lines involving the Cochrane Gambit. My version of Crafty (with no book.pgn file as yet) leaves book fairly early. Or to be more accurate leaves the lines described in the books I have available; NCO and "A Startling Chess Opening Repertoire" auth. Baker publ. Everyman Chess.
OK back to topic. I would like to know if there is a way to seach for positions within a large pgn file using Winboard. I know this feature is available in CM6000 (hey, it was new when I bought it ;)) but I have long since given those discs out and am looking for something free or that doesn't count as frivalous on a student budget to search for games containing a specified position based on whose turn it is to move.
Possible in Winboard?

You could try Scid:

http://scid.sourceforge.net/

It's free and has a lot of features.

Holy cow thank you. I was actually able figure out how to sift through a pgn in less than a minute after spending an hour on Chessbase Light. Is it just me or does CB light feel un-intuitive?
This is a great program thank you. I will definitely have to make a donation.
