Stepping through an EPD game

Postby Norm Pollock » 31 Aug 2010, 15:16

I use Winboard to step through games in EPD format. I go to File / Load Position ... and then open an EPD file.

The File Menu says that I have to press "Alt + Shift + PgDn" for the next position, and "Alt + Shift + PgUp" for the previous position.

However I have found that the "Alt" key is not necessary on my system. "Shift + PgDn" will go to the next position, and "Shift + PgUp" will go to the previous position.

Is this an error in Winboard directions? Or does my machine perform "magic"? :)

And if this is an error in the Menu instructions, are there any other similar errors?

It is not really an error, but more an undocumented feature. The acelerators are defined both with and without Alt. It was already like that in 4.2.7. I have no idea why... Perhaps one was added because it was more logical in view of the other assignments, and the others were kept for backward compatibility.

Not all accelerators are listed with the menu items. E.g. Revert and Truncate Game also have accelerators (Home and End). These are not listed in the manual either

This is unexpected feature of the game. It was not documented so it looks like an error but it helps. I think it is better if there is a next update then it should be documented.
