Playing black with winboard with JFW

Postby itaca » 01 Oct 2011, 10:02

Hi,

I enjoy very much winboard but I have a problem and perhaps you can help me.

I am totally blind and my screen reader is JFW. When I am playing black, JFW reads the board exactly as I was playing white,

that means, the square a1 on my left and the square h1 on my right, and the row containing a8-h8 keeps in the opposite side.

The board on the screen seems to be correct, but JFW doesn't read the position correctly.

Any help for us? Thank you for reading.

I guess you would want the flipview option to affect the movement of the board cursor in reaction to the arrow keys?

This is currently not implemented. But I can try to implement that in a future version. It seems that the only change that is required is to swap the functions of Up / Down and Left Right Arrow keys when flipview is used. And perhaps start the cursor on h8 rather than a1. And perhaps also swapping the reading of upper and lower diagonals.

Indeed, that would be awsome if you are playing against the computer or against an online opponent and if you do not have a tactile chessboard at present. This could allow the blind players to review the board from black point-of-view while you flip the board, and vice versa otherwise.
