Illegal move by GnuChess...

Postby J_Huikari » 14 Dec 2005, 10:09

I have played engine-v-engine matches with WinBoard using option
/mg 30 (or some other number of games). Sometimes (not very often)
engines make illegal moves when starting a new game.

Yesterday I played Nero against Gnu. In game 13 Gnu's first move
was illegal. (Still playing the previous game?) Nero had resigned in
game 12. (Time control was all moves in 3 minutes.)

Is this problem of engines or doesn't WinBoard always reset the
engines correctly when starting a new game?

Hi,
Which version of Gnuchess you used!?
What parameters did you use in the command line!?

I used that GnuChess which comes with WinBoard 4.2.7
AutoFlag and No pondering.

Sorry that this answer comes in so many messages. I'm just drinking
my second mug of coffee this morning.

I used that startup dialog box. And only additional option was the
number of games /mg 30 or something.

Hello Jari,
We need a debug file otherwise help is difficult.
(Can you reproduce the error with WB 4.27x AS?)
You can get it from this sticky topic. I would advise you
to read the whole thread anyway as a WB prog author ;-)

I tried to reproduce your problem, because I thought you
do perhaps something wrong with resigning, but here Nero 6.0
from December 3rd never resigns(so far it always played until
it was mated by Gnu in 2 0 games)?

My new version NeroWB 6.1 resigns in games of type All in N minutes too.

You can download it from http://www.kanetti.fi/jari.huikari

So this problem could be due to NeroWB? I'll try to find out and fix it.

I don't know if I'm doing anything wrong in resigning. When
resigning Nero always
moves first and then tells that it resigns. Is that wrong? Should it
rather announce it's resignation right after opponents move without
moving self any more?

It is better to resign without making a real move on the
board anymore. If your last search triggers the resign command
skip the move and just send the resign command.
AFAIK some programs might have a problem with input, if it
happens the way you do it.

Regards,
Guenther
P.S. I downloaded nero 6.1 and played test games with 2 0,
but still it never resigned? What are the conditions for resigning?

It will resign if the score has been worse than -9.7 ten moves in row.

Often the opponent mates before that.

I'm currently running hundred All moves in 1 minute games against Gnu.
Nero has resigned couple of times and the next games have began
all right.

Hi again Jari,

I see 10 moves in a row is a lot ;) That was the reason it never happened
in my fast 2 minutes games. Would you mind to lower it to 6?
For the second part of your message, does this mean you have
already changed the resign behaviour or did Gnu behave better this
time? ;-)
BTW did you have a look at the WB 4.27x thread? This extended
WB version has some very good improvements(new features) and fixed
a few rare bugs in old WB(e.g.buffer overflows).

Below an example what infos new WB can save now in PGN files:

Often the opponent mates before that.

I'm currently running hundred All moves in 1 minute games against Gnu.
Nero has resigned couple of times and the next games have began
all right.

Hi again Jari,

I see 10 moves in a row is a lot ;) That was the reason it never happened
in my fast 2 minutes games. Would you mind to lower it to 6?
For the second part of your message, does this mean you have
already changed the resign behaviour or did Gnu behave better this
time? ;-)
BTW did you have a look at the WB 4.27x thread? This extended
WB version has some very good improvements(new features) and fixed
a few rare bugs in old WB(e.g.buffer overflows).

...

Yes, I can lower that to 6 moves. Gnu behaved better this time. I
didn't change anything in NeroWB 6.1 yet.

I haven't looked at WB 4.27x thread yet.

Maybe that moving and resigning can also confuse opponents clock.
Because Gnu chess lost on time twice against Nero in winning position.

Here are the four games. Two resigned by Nero and two lost on time by Gnu:

Updated NeroWB 6.1

Postby J_Huikari » 14 Dec 2005, 14:23

I put the updated version to my home page
http://www.kanetti.fi/jari.huikari/

Now it resigns after 6 bad scores (less than -9.70) in row.

Also it won't make the last move when it resigns.

Re: Illegal move by GnuChess...

The time problem with GnuChess is probably due to my computer.
It has Windows 98 and sometimes it gets stuck for a while and
perhaps it caused time loss for Gnu.
