CEGT ended

Postby Uschi » 13 May 2006, 11:43

Hi all,

due to changes in his private life, Heinz wont have the time to continue the work with CEGT any longer.

A big project ends, a project, that was organised by Heinz with a tremendous quantum of work, passion and energy. The dream to be able to focus the power of computer chess fans to a unique form of teamwork has been realized. There is a great melancholy in me seeing a work ending, which combined the energy of so many enthusiastic testers.

Heinz sparked my interest in computerchess and I met many amiable people during my work with CEGT . I want to say thanks to any of them for giving their power for this project, for giving interest impulses to think about. A big "Thanks", too, to all those engine authors, who enriched the work with CEGT a lot with their contribution!

On the other side, I met a lot of hatred, jealousy and hypocrisy which lead to pain, emotional distress, quarrels. I had to realise, that the world of chessplayers I met in computerchess is a completely different one than the world of chessplayers I knew from my active time of playing tournament chess. Just look now...I find postings preverting the facts, speaking of "fail again", postings, that put sadness on but take the chance to see the possibility for advertisment for their work in the circumstance, that personal chances forces the end of a great work....this is not my world, this is not the place, where I want to pursue my hobby.

Heinz managed to lead a group of different testers over 2 years, he did not only do the amazing work to collect, check and update a sum of 120 000 games played in AEGT and CEGT but had also the ungraceful job to reduce all different wishes, opinions, preferences to a common denominator. All of you, who has any experience with teamwork should know what this means. As usual in computer chess, thank and feedback came scanty whilest the voices of envier and wisenheimers are loud.
It?s an effrontery to write about failure with all the tremendous work CEGT presented. It?s at least tasteless to ballyhoo others work in times of farewell.

Changes are not only sad, changes hold the possibility of new ideas, new energy, new experiences. I wish, that your changes will be good changes, Heinz. All the best for your new duties!
Thanks to all these of you, who made the work with CEGT joyful and pleasant!

Bye,

Uschi

Hi Uschi and all :) ,

thanks to all testers for their efforts and support and to all authors and readers who followed our work.

Especially thanks to you for designing all the nice graphics for the website and for installing this short-living forum. And of course for being our good soul in the hardest times.

Believe me it is not easy to give up the group project AEGT/CEGT after all this years. It was indeed a dream in this small and somehow cold chess computer world full of numbers, with people in some fora more interested in quarreling than to give quality messages.

There was a lot of fun and a lot of sorrow. Some became good friends I think and that?s worth most.

After all nothing is eternal.

So chins up, I want to read a lot from all of you in the future about nice tournaments and matches.

One word to the lies told by always the same guy in another forum (and it is because of such people that I lost also fun).

I did not finish AEGT, but gave the organization to another tester. The same way I did not end CEGT, but still would like to support with games if another one wants to organize it, what I do not have the time to do anymore. This request was posted in CEGT forum.

Best Regards
Heinz

It is sad to see this testing ending.

My thanks go to everyone who has contributed to CEGT over the years.

I find it interesting to see these rating lists and the progress engines have made over the years. Several years ago I had thought that most improvements would be from hardware - I am glad to have been wrong.

Testing encourages competition and competition creates improvement.

Thanks again

All the best for the future Heinz. I hope things work out well for you.
The sterling work done by CEGT will be sorely missed indeed.

Regards, Graham.

Hi Shaun :) ,

yes, it is still highly interesting and my interest in computer chess did not decrease just for having not enough time to do the organization. I will continue to let run games with tournament time control on my four machines and will put them to the replay zone each week on Friday.

What I do not want to do anymore is posting in fora with the current spamming and strange people telling nothing but lies.

Best Regards
Heinz

Hi Heinz

Its a pity to hear that :(

I think it is a great (huge) work that provides many (all) information about many engines (uci, winboard and chessbase) and orients new people about engines strengh with that huge rating list.

I hope to see you here more times :D

See you soon

Hola Sergio :) ,

thanks for your kind words.

Be sure that I will read almost anything here. In this times I am starting to value efforts of those people having a heart also for the weaker amateurs. And your nice tournaments count amongst them.

Your work and efforts mean a lot to many, too, Thanks for this.

Best Wishes
Heinz

Hi Heinz :)

Sorry to read of this sad news :(

** Many thanks ** for all your hard work over such a long period of time. I think you had to be in it to fully appreciate the effort involved. Thanks also to all the other dedicated testers :)
