Have fun!

The Roman Empire lasted after Alaric for 1043 years untill the fall of Constantinople in 1453 to the Turks. It was not all decline in those years. There were periods of great strength in wich the empire was well respected and feared. In all that time, if they would have reverted back to a republic that the majority of people could believe in and would be willing to give their lives for, I am positive it would still exist today. Great empires like that of the Romans do not fall from without they fall from within when the people would rather be conqured than give their lives for their country!

Hello Peter,

Thanks for the new program. Any chance of a Mac OS X version?

Thanks also for your article about Alaric and the Goths - ancient history is one of my great passions.

While it is true that the Byzantine Empire survived until 1453, it wasn't really "Roman" except in name, except in the first couple of centuries. For most of its history, the Byzantine Empire was completely Greek, culturally and linguistically.

If you say that the Roman Empire lasted until 1453, you can just as well argue that it lasted until the fall of the Ottoman Empire in 1922. The Ottomans regarded their empire as a natural continuation of the Eastern Roman and Byzantine empire.

Hi Tord,

The Roman Empire became more than land conqured by Latins. It became a people that believed in roads and aquaducts and civilization. The only word that stood for that in that part of the world during those times was "Roman". Greek may have been and always was the underlying culture of the eastern empire and the Greeks never forgot that they were Greek even though they also thought themselves as Roman. To call a citizen of the eastern empire not a Roman was considered to be an insult. The word Byzantine was not even invented untill long after constantinople had fallen and then only by western historians that wanted to downplay the Roman Empire's part in history by pretending that it fell in 476 A.D. Justinian, whom almost retook the west a century or so later also was responsible for the Roman Codex of law--not the Byzantine Codex! The very last emporer that died defending Constantinople as it fell to the turks called himself Roman. In 1926 when the Greeks became independant they suposedly looked for an heir to the Roman throne and would have ressurected the ROMAN EMPIRE if they had found one! Even in 1926 there were Greeks that thought themselves as being Roman.

The Ottoman's only wanted to use the term Roman to strengthen their claim to the land and for political clout. The Russians tried to claim that they had the right to succession of the Roman Empire for religious dominance. Same as the Holy Roman Empire in the west. All those mentioned in this paragraph and more used the word Roman when it benifited their political or religious purposes, but none of them really thought of themselves as Roman! And that is the difference!!

Mike

I really was hoping that you would comment on my post about languages!!! :D

I have no idea. Here is the statistics I get:
Code: Select all
Day Hits  Files Pages Visits  KBytes
10    459   382   105     52    3013
11    598   481    94     48    3485
12   1350  1148   220     63    8194
13    681   558    96     46    4115
14    803   688   143     54    4748
15   5782  4593   676    228  225675

as you can see something happend the 15th but I can not see the number of downloads.

Thanks for the link!
I am at the early stages of developing a Go! playing program.
Now the move generation is almost done except for implementing some special Ko rules. I might have to rewrite everything once i think of a better board representation.

Before i look in to other's people work, i want to see how far i can go with the knowledge i have from chess. It seems that brute force is impossible with Go, so i am going to try a very selective search say considering only the best 25 moves out of hundreds!

Is there a Go forum where Go programmers frequent? Also is there
a computer Go tournament like WBEC. The only thing I can find are Go servers where you connect through internet. Luckily there is a Go text protocol (GTP) where i can do matches with GnuGo myself.

Thanks
Daniel

I'd recommend to start with at least 100 games on smaller board.
Free program Igowin is an excellent partner on 9x9 for all beginners (up to single-digit kyus).

A lot of games can be found at http://www.go4go.net/v2/ and at http://gobase.org
