Collection of 1250 Starting Positions

Postby Pradu » 29 Nov 2007, 00:43

Nunn I and Nunn II seem to be well recognized quality starting positions for engine testing. However, there are only 30 of them. Are there other high quality starting positions? I'm looking to see if anyone has already collected about 1250 starting positions for testing.

On a side note, I just put up PSWBTM 2.0

Hello Pradu,

I am much more interested in your side note!

Downloaded it and read the readme but I did not see any changes.

What is the good stuff that is new with this version?

I really like your tourney manager.

Stable. Solid. Light on my ancient (soon to be upgraded) machine.

Thanks for the software.

Later.

I don't remember them all. But the main ones include the "Two games" and "Rewind" options for starting position options. Import of Initial Pairings from PGN files (other formats to be supported later). I've also added a smart name detector routine, eg "Glaurung, 1.0", "Glaurung 1.0", or "Glaurung10" will be detected as being the same engine if no other closer matches exist. I also tested it a little with Winboard_F and have included a makefile for Linux in the source distribution.

Nowhere near 1250, but I have some various openings collected into this test (which I have started to analyze):

Have you tested it under Linux?

It compiles and runs fine under Ubuntu with ICC... just that it doesn't work with xboard. I think that it would be a better idea to port recent Winboards using a cross-platform GUI library to Linux. Perhaps GTK+ would work well because Winboard is written in C.

Thanks for your collection. Are you going to remove the positions which score too lopsided?

The positions with a clear advantage should not be used for neutral tournaments.
