Zappa

Postby Pablo » 24 Feb 2005, 20:42

Hello Anthony:
I tested your last Zappa version in a PC with Windows98SE and Intel Pentium III and in another also with Windows 98SE and Intel Celeron 778Mhz, and in both Zappa exit with the following Zappa log file:

"set_option(): threads = 1
game_start_thread(0): spawning worker thread!
error starting workers: 87"

A lot of Winboarders for several weeks or month had been expectant to use you engine, but this had not been posible, as you can notice in this forum.
I am afraid the problem is in your compilation program, maybe to advanced or sophisticated for many PC. Once again I suggest to approach some friend or well known programmer so to compilate an standard Zappa version that everybody can enjoy
Cheers,
Pablo

PS: I do not want to give up !!!

Win98 and/or a Celeron processor seems to be the common factor in the remaining bug reports.

Will Zappa play with this book in RWBC?

Arrow The public book doesnt play bad line at all. Zappa?s Books are based on nagged files and pgn files. If Zappa chooses the french exchange mainly (because it is not the only system against the french defense), Zappa statistics consider that exchange has a better overall in the pgn database used to create the book. Even though several moves are nagged with !!, Zappa prefers the move with the better statistics.

Additionally, Anthony requests me to use unusual openings in this opening book because he wanted to see the Zappa?s behavior in such openings, although we had run long tests with such openings.

The public book is optional and if you think, it doesnt fill your expectations, you have other options. Just a matter of tastes. Very Happy

Hi Arturo, I have not said the French exchange is a bad line,
but it makes it very easy for Humans to make a draw and it is
one of the most drawish lines around too.
Actually I would always even try to win here for positional
reasons as Black and being a Human.
More important is that it is used as _only_ answer to the French
with 100% probability and it has not the best statistics as the
log from Zappa tells? Did I missunderstand you because it seems
you said something else in your message?

Hello Guenther:

My objective is not to debate why the third move after 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. e4xd5 was chosen. In the second move there are alredy other posibilities.

I have seen Shredder choosing 3. Bd3 in Official Tournaments and it was not a tragedy. Of course, it won the game. The King played 1. b3 in the ICT4 Tournament and it beated DeepSjeng, for example.

Again, I repeat my explanation:
"Zappa?s Books are based on nagged files and pgn files. If Zappa chooses the french exchange mainly (because it is not the only system against the french defense), Zappa statistics consider that exchange has a better overall in the pgn database used to create the book.
