A (new?) bug in Zappa

Postby Guenther Simon » 06 Mar 2005, 18:18

In the following game from a current test tourney neither
SpiderChess nor Zappa claimed a draw with Kings only
on the board?
Instead after SpiderChess' last King move, Zappa echoed
its last move, which is an illegal move?
(the result will be corrected to a draw later of course)
Zappa played with 16MB tablebase cache and it was initialized
correctly. (Zappas log file saved too)

Me too

I have also seen Zappa fail when a game got to king vs king. In my case it crashed and the log files were incomplete, but it also showed searches up to depth 63. I had table bases disabled, and Zappa was playing another copy of itself.

Hi Guenther,

Spiderchess never claims a draw when there is insufficient material.
It's not implemented ...
Till now it was always the other program (or the GUI or ICC) that took care of it but Zappa is apparently an exception. :D

Should it be implemented when the engine plays in your tournament?

I'll go ahead and add draw claim by insufficient material. The problem is that in the search Zappa knows this (it immediately stops the search) but it never actually claims the draw ;)

63 btw is Zappa's max depth, which is why it appears when Zappa is in tablebases or opening book.

Thanks Anthony that would be fine.

BTW it seems I have found another small bug meanwhile:
If I set up Zappa for analysis at least in WB, its time management
does not work correctly for very slow time controls?
E.g. sometimes I set 40/3000 or may be 5 hours for the whole game,
just to simulate long analysis and here I noticed that Zappa will
move almost immediately if a tc is set up higher than around 2.5 hours?

Another much worser one was, that I have experienced the tablebase
bug meanwhile, also with a 16MB tablebase cache in one or may be
even two games. (First one was a rook blunder in a drawn position,
second one missed a win - interesting position BTW)

[diag]3N4/2p3K1/8/2p5/2P1k3/8/8/8 w - - 0 50[/diag]
3N4/2p3K1/8/2p5/2P1k3/8/8/8 w - - 0 50
Zappa played Ne6? here with tablebases, which draws immediately,
as the last pawn falls - IIRC it will play the right Nc6, which
wins in a nice way, without tablebases.

Despite the loss of 2 half points Zappa shared place 1 in my last
test tourney before Class B starts.

(Results + table later)

I guess I should disable tablebases at all now, as long the bug
is not fixed?

Best regards,
Guenther

Hi Martin,

I would appreciate it, if it is not too much work for you?
BTW Spider was a real draw master in the test tourney:
9 draws out of 17 ;)

Best,

Hi Guenther,

It turns out that it is not so easy to add this draw claim.
Reason: extremely messy code!
So perhaps I will not be able to fix it soon, I hope that is not a problem.

Draw master - yeah, it's apparently a side effect of the pruning that I use.
As yet no idea  what to do about it ...

I sent an update to volker; whenver he gets around to updating we'll see how the new version works. It should work in Fritz too now.

I'm going to update it tomorrow morning. I'm recovering. BTW: your e-mail is still bouncing.

I'm not putting any pressure on you. To be honest, the only reason I posted it was that I was curious if the board was down or something, because there weren't any posts at all for a solid 12 hours ;)

Verizon does superfiltering I guess. I never get any spam, but they seem to filter out a ton of stuff. I need to get a gmail account.

May I suggest to assign version no. 1.1 (or 1.01) to the most recent version, as soon as it has been successfully tested on all CPUs and with different tbs. cache sizes and in several GUIs?

There seems to be an error. It seems my provider changed something at the server setup and the cookie doesn't work properly any more.
I changed the configuration of the forum software. It should work now again. If unread message still indicated as read, please display the cookies saved on your computer (how to do that depends on your browser) and delete all beginning with "wbforum040924*".

Not the worst idea. Unfortunately I can't invite anyone.
