This is because you left out the pixmapDirectory argument

xboard -size 72 -pixmapDirectory /home/r/xboard/merida/sandbar/

You cannot expect XBoard to see a pathname you prefixed by '-' and understand by telepathy that you want it to use that for loading pixmaps, rather than, say, using it for saving games, looking for Polyglot etc. All XBoard options first require an option name (starting with -) before the option value.

This is also not strange: XBoard remembers its settings. So although the previous startup with -size 72 was aborted because of the invalid '-PATHNAME', it did probaby understand the -size 72 correctly, and remembered that when you started it up again. In the same way it will remember the pixmapDirectory until you change it.

In XBoard the option -messageFont can be used to specify another font. This new font is then used in the message field (above the board), as well as on the menu bar, in the menus and in menu dialogs and auxiliary windows. X-fonts have very cumbersome names, though, like

-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--12-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

where the * are wildcards for certain properties. But you could, for instance, try

xboard -messageFont "-*-helvetica-medium-r-bold--14-*-*-*-*-*-*-*"

to get 14-point bold font in stead. This is remembered in the ~/.xboardrc settings file, and you could also change the font by editing that. (Which is usually more cumbersome than using command-line options, but in this case is competitive because you don't have to type a font specifier from scratch, but can just change the parts of it you want changed.)

rulet, I can't remember where I got all of my chess fonts. I have dozens of different fonts, although most of them look terrible to me and I don't care for many of them at all. Only a small handful are worth enough to use.

What and how do I have to replace in .xboardrc to change helvetica to another font, f.e. to DejaVu Sans Bold, otherwise how to change f.e. this string(which is current)?:

I guess I was wrong, and it was not the 'normal' that had to be replaced by 'bold', but the medium. To get another typeface you would have to replace the 'helvetica' by the name of it. (This worked when I replaced it by 'courier'.) Not sure where the 'sans' should go; quite possible that it should replace one of the asterisk.

If you specify a font that is not available, XBoard falls back onto some ugly monospace font.

That is pretty much all I know about it; I am not really a Linux user, so I rarely use XBoard. To find more information on how fonts work on Linux, and in particular on X-applications, you should search on 'X fonts'.

starts xboard, but this helvetica is ugly on my system, so I'll try to change the font.

...Still cannot find the answer for how to make fonts in menu of xboard to look like others menus in applications.

I've been working with Monge and he has allowed me to use his pieces. As of 2.0.9 we have 3 monge set's eyes, spatial, and fantasy. I love them. but i'm reminded by users that lantern chess on android lacks chess pieces in more traditional styles. Unfortunately all the piece sets i find such as these are on essentially GPL agreements. I.e. use implies open source. Lantern Chess is GPL www.lanternchess.com and i use a wide variety of sets. But its a shame that there are not more sets for free programs that seek to remain closed source. We just want to show off all these wonderful pieces

I don't think there is any limitation on using data files in closed-source programs, as long as the user can legally obtain those data files. Pixmaps are a standard format, and it is not forbidden for closed-source formats to read data in that format.

There could be restrictions on whether you are allowed to bundle or host pixmaps of others, but you can always provide a link to the place where people could download those themselves, with instructions were to save them. I do the same with engines. Free engines that I cannot bundle with WinBoard for copyright reasons are replaced in the install by a dummy .exe, which pops up an html page with download instructions for the corresponding engine.

I don't think using something as input to display it is legally considered a form of copying or distributing. If people can legally obtain a copy of these pixmaps, displaying them in a GUI doesn't require that GUI to be open source anymore that it requires Windows to become open source for displaying the images in the file explorer. Copyleft only puts conditions on granting permission for actions that require permission according to copyright law.

I decided that there was probably no harm in taking your interpretation, that i was just displaying the pieces, pieces any user can have for himself, and was not adapting them or remixing them. I added the Merida set to lantern chess on android. I do give attribution in the program in the board menu about board menu item. should publish out in a couple of hours and be on the market.
