I replaced _read() with ReadFile() and WaitForSingleObject() combination.
Both APIs are in kernel32.dll

Maybe we don't understamd each other but it worked here very well. I only used xboard and polyglot.

Its a bit off-topic, but because some readers are considering to try Linux some remarks from side. It would be wrong to expect the paradise on earth, but I don't regred my decision to change.

To have MS fonts available is nearly necessary. Many websites (including this one) look terrible is only the standard fonts are installed. I highly recommend to install them by using the tools of your distrubution (yum, apt whatever is used). If someone circumvents the package management of the operating system he takes the risk to introduce a dependency conflict (for example). Here is a package available which solves the problem perfectly legal and without "dirty hacks".

Yes. I recommend to format the wharddisk before instaling Linux and then burn all windows installation media in the night at full moon in a big fire, singing and dancing around it  .

Agreed. Get rid of the evil!Even on Windows I use the IE only for the Windows update.

Yes.

Peter Eizenhammer wrote:...Often it takes only the transfer of a single dll from your real windows and everything works fine , as the needed functionality exists now.

When I needed one I found them somewhere on the internet using google (just type in the name of the dll). I don't remember the URL. This way I surronded all potential legal problems associated with copying the dll from an original windows installation. At the moment there aren't any problems here because:

Code: Select all
[volker@VPITTLIK ~]$ wine
bash: wine: command not found
[volker@VPITTLIK ~]$

The only windows program I really "needed" was the Agent newsreader (which works great with wine). Meanwhile pan is on the same level (if not better) so there is no need to use wine for me at all.

OK, the selection of engines is limited, but don't miss something really. Others may have another point of view.
