Queen 3.00 released

Postby Leen Ammeraal » 17 Feb 2005, 20:51

Queen 3.00 is available from my website
http://home.planet.nl/~ammeraal/

There is now only one version. It can be used for
engine-engine games as queen-wb did previously,
so note the name change: queen.exe instead of queen-wb.exe.
On the other hand, if you start Queen yourself, not using any general
interface program, the built-in GUI will show for play against humans.

Thank you Pedro for letting me know.
I fixed this problem and now the new version number 3.01
appears both in UCI and WinBoard output, as well as
in the "About Queen" dialog box in stand-alone mode.

Hello Leen,

at first many thanks for your update! :)

I?m only using Queen with its own GUI, and I?ve found a strange behaviour in the latest release 3.0/3.01:
After I (as white) have made a move, the board immediately shows the position at the end of the PV it is thinking about, and when it has finished its search, then the board returns to the position of the found move!?
This temporarily flashing of the board (displaying the PV position) has not occured in previous versions, and I really don?t like this very much! :(

So is this simply a bug or an intended new ?feature??
If it?s the 2nd, is there any way to switch off this behaviour?

Addition:
And there?s another thing I?ve just discovered: I can?t find an option ?Ponder on/off? any longer in the menu - and Queen seems to NOT ponder at all!? :(

Best regards,
Franz.

Hello Franz,
This was certainly not intended. I don't notice this flashing on
my computer (AMD 64, 3000). I will look at the code to see
if there is anything suspicous in this regard. I wonder if you
would be prepared to test a new experimental version on
your machine if/when I have one. If so, please send me
an e-mail message, so that I receive your e-mail address.
You can find mine on my website http://home.planet.nl/~ammeraal/.
(Don't click on this e-mail addres but retype it.)
Thanks for your reaction.

Hello Leen,

it seem we have written at the same time!

So here my addition to the above post - maybe you didn?t see it yet:
"And there?s another thing I?ve just discovered: I can?t find an option ?Ponder on/off? any longer in the menu - and Queen seems to NOT ponder at all!?"

And for this ?flashing? problem:
I don?t play with any external book!
Simply try the 1st move 1.a4 several times (with a level of 5sec/move) - after that I get very strange positions on the board while Queen is thinking about its 1st black move!

There must really be something wrong with the program, but I?m sure you?ll find the problem. And of course I?d like to try your experimental version if it?s ready, so my email is on the way ...

Regards,
Franz.

I played 1.a4 with the released version 3.01 without external
book and it did not show the strange things you wrote about.
Of course, you are right that something should be fixed, so I
sent you a new experimental version by e-mail. As for pondering, well
it works in machine-machine games, not in GUI mode, but
I will try to supply the option to do that as well, as you
suggest.
