installation/usage in Windows NT

Many of our applications are executed merely by clicking on them or invoking their name in a command line. Examples are Winboard, Crafty, and Chess Partner. Such simplicity is different than the usual method in Windows NT 4 - some magical background program installs the application and sets lots of registry items.
My question is: how do I make Registry entries for these applications? Is it automatic or do we need to do something?
