I have a very odd problem with some versions of Crafty (19.17, 19.18, 19.19, 19._19 and Classic) but not others (19.1).

The word "exit" is stuffed somewhere. It is prepended to the first command. For example, if I type in "display", Crafty responds "Illegal move (ambiguous): exitdisplay.

I can live with this if I'm running Crafty directly but if I go up a level, say to Winboard or Chess Partner, difficulties are hidden.

Anyone familiar with the passing of commands back and forth have any ideas?

I don't know what you mean with version 19._19.

Do you mean that you can't exit Crafty in console mode with the command exit?

I use the command quit to exit console mode.

I have two versions of 19.19. To distinguish them, I call one 19.19 and the other 19._19. The executable file for 19.19 is Crafty1919blended.exe, 912kB, 1/16/05, 3:08PM; the executable file for 19._19 is Crafty.exe, 900kB, 2/19/05, 5:41PM.

Not that it matters because they both have this problem.

I'm not talking about using "exit" as a command. I'm saying that in console mode, the string "exit" gets put before the first command. So if I type "hi" the command is "exithi". If I type exit the command is "exitexit". If I type "quit" (one way to terminate the application) it comes out as "exitquit". Naturally, none of these commands are recognized so they all result in an error message.

Is this clearer?

If Crafty were run as an engine, I fear this bungling of the first command would get buried and unnoticed.

Ok it's a bit clearer.

What is the contents of your crafty.rc file?

Just a guess. Open your crafty.rc, for example with notepad. Jump to the very end of the file, which will be just after the t of the word exit. Hit Enter, type Ctrl-S. Close Notepad and start Crafty again. If it works, write a mail to Bob, asking him to fix this problem Many people have fallen into this trap. Many (old faishoned) editors did not allow you, to save a file without an ending newline. Nowadays, it is typically possible. Crafty depends on that newline beeing there.

Bingo. That did it on every one of the versions that had this problem. 19.1 didn't have the problem because it doesn't use Crafty.rc.

What character is ctrl-S? I know ctrl-Z is end of file.
