Kiwi 0.6a final release (and I mean final)

Hi folks,
Kiwi 0.6a is available on my chess page:

http://www.ascotti.org/programming/chess/chess.htm

Unless new and extraordinary events happen, there are no more releases planned.
The page contains executables for Windows, Linux and Mac Os X, as well as the source files and some bitbase files (not really useful, they're there just to show the "knowledgeable compression" approach).

Bye Kiwi! :(

Hi Alessandro,
Are you going to start working on a new engine?
I hope that you didn't lose your interest in programimg chess engines :(

I am sorry, but you are just too interesting of a poster to let slip off into the sunset. I fully intend to goad you into Kiwi 7.0, 8.0, 9.0 ... etc.

Don't underestimate my terrible powers. I have cajoled many a programmer out of doing something useful and into slaving over a hot monitor -- all for my computer chess enjoyment. Perhaps I will give you a brief respite, but slowly, surely, inexorably -- I'll drag you back...

[Imagine a maniacal laugh trailing off into the night]

Thanks!

I just started a Noomen match against Glaurung 0.2.4. The time control is 4 1, the computer an iMac G5 1.8 GHz. The first game was one of the wildest draws I have seen:

Code: Select all
[Event "Computer chess game"]
[Site "cm-84.118.55.099.chello.no"]
[Date "2005.07.12"]
[Round "1"]
[White "Glaurung 0.2.4"]
[Black "Kiwi 0.6a"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
[TimeControl "240+1"]

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. O-O Be7 6. Re1 b5 7. Bb3 d6 8.

Truly spectacular play by Kiwi. I am sure your little bird had a win somewhere, but I don't dare to guess where.

Unless new and extraordinary events happen, there are no more releases planned.

OK, as long as you promise to write a new engine to replace it, and we don't have to wait too long for the first version.

How about "Emu" for the name of his new engine -- which is something like a monster Kiwi, but a few thousand times more massive.

I can't wait to see the picture of one of those standing on his head.

LOL! Ok ok... I shoot the picture but then *you* clean up the cage! :D

P.S. Thanks for your words guys, I am definitely not going away! I plan to do some more work on Winboard and will soon start working at another engine... I know the name already but I'm not telling yet! 8-)

Hello Alessandro,

nice to see that your Kiwi has become GPL now
(what reminds me of the story about the thorn birds,
who sing their finest song using their final breath, ah, flow my tears... ;-))
Many Thanks !
About names: hm, a Kiwi out of the ashes might become a Phoenix, or a Dodo, who knows.
I would like to see a Buffy 8-) having fun with or against Spike, but thats a little bit off topic, isn't it?

good luck for your new project(s)
Peter

Phoenix is the working title of the chess program I am currently writing... except that it isn't working :(

In fact from experience to date, it's more a case of sinking into the ashes than rising up from them! (there must be a suitable name for this  ).

Best wishes

Chris

It is also the name of a famous old chess program by Jonathan Schaeffer.

Hi Tord, :)

Thanks, I was unaware of this and will re-name my attempt not that it is likely to be released in future or perhaps even finished.

Hmm, pity 'Patzer' and 'Woodpusher' are already in use also

Best wishes

Chris
