Fafis 2.52

Hello everyone,

Maybe this was asked before, if its the case my apologies. I had Fafis 1.5 working on my PIV 1.5 GHz Win Xp under Arena without problems, I installed the new version yesterday and it doesnt work. When I run the executable it crashes. Am I doing something wrong?

Hello Carlos,

Do you have the .Net Framework installed?
The new Fafis is written in C# and needs this on order to work.
A possible source for it is here:

Having said this, I have to confess that it does not work for me either
(It calculates in console mode, but puts out nonsense in Arena).

So it would be nice, if anybody who got it working could tell about it,
so that one knows if it is worth trying.
(can send some more info stuff then, too, of course).

ok, looks like Fafis does not understand something like edit or setup position
(sorry for not being too familiar with these protocoll things),
but when Fafis 252 is set up not to use an arena book,
and uses its own book only, it works here. (cool hack, isn't it )

Hello everyone

have installed ms netframework 1.0 under win2k and fafis 2.52 played in little playoff-tournament to div b - but it got only 0,5 points from 32 games at blitz 40 moves in 5 min. i dont had believed that and checked the games but it belong to fafis - the games were ok - no timeforfeit or hanging - rating 1575

Hello,

I dont remember everything, and am too lazy too search in the archives,
but Fafis was one of the engines that should go commercial, inspired by FQ et al.

This became difficult when there were suspicions about cloning, (I dont know if these suspicions were justified),
the project was stopped and iirc the strong version 1.09 has never been public.
There was a story about a virus, and again I am not sure about what happened, but it was not funny, imo.

Obviously there was a complete restart, and that is the open source engine
fafis 2.5x, written in a new language (C#).
It is not as strong as the old version was, that is true, but I think it may be
some better than 1600 Elo, maybe one should update the framework from 1.0 to 1.1,
not sure, but it can make a difference.
My impression is that Rafael Pena really wants a new start, and I respect that,
ok, I use better virus scanners now, and more of them ,
but everybody deserves a second chance, imo.

but it will increase again - the author will use his second chance
