It's too late. It is no longer offered free of charge. It will be a commercial engine shortly.

Am I sentenced to death if I sent the engine to him? I was not not aware that that engine was offered for download for 24 hours only. Am I now not allowed to do with it what I want (except selling it of course)?

These questions are not specifically for you Dann.

yeah Volker i agree !

I don't understand this thing. For the commercial way its good to send the engine to some selected tester and they posting the result that everybody wants to buy it. This is the logical way. Offering a download makes only sense if it forever or not. If i would be a customer, i'm very angry about this held back and don't expect an good management or support in the future.

So why this bullshit ?
It looks like that some people have really to learn how works a management to win new customers. And i'am really not an expert in such things!

Best,
Daniel

1)To Volker:Certainly there is no death punishment for people who sent the beta version to other people even if it is illegal.

Note that I think that a law that claims that it is illegal when people did not pay for it and did not accept conditions that they are not allowed to circulate it before downloading it is a bad law.

2)I do not see a reason for customers to be angry and not to expect good management because of the fact that the programmer offered beta version for free for limited time.

Note that the commercial version is going to support more options relative to the beta version like multi-pv and I think that the fact that people got the beta version for free may encourage customers to buy it.

I can't agree with point 2. That the commercial version may has more options plays no rolls. I'm talking about held back. For those people which having a version, they are still happy, but such people ,may readed the annoucment to late, however which reason, having now a problem. I don't like such political buisness stlye. In fact, if they are smart they shouldn't buy this engine.
It's time to learn that you shouldn't handle customers like a cattle.
With the principle: "Those people buying everything anyway".

Daniel,I disagree

I do not see bad treatment to customers.

1)Most of the people who did not download in time and are really interested in getting it can get it from someone who already downloaded it

2)Even in case that they cannot get it from a friend I do not understand why being angry about the programmer.

The programmer gave a gift to some people and it is not a reason to be against him but a reason to be happy for the people who got it.

Hi Uri,

1) The users shouldn't do that. If the author not allow this specialy it's fordidden. See international copyright rights. Btw there are better methods to realize this: (time stamps in programs and so on)

2) They don't have the version ?

However, it concerns me here about the principle and what happend in the past, see loop list for an example and the tricky name versions or the hardware protection of fruit. This goes all a way i don't like at all.

Daniel

Did the author state somewhere that the Rybka beta cannot be further distributed? The way I see it is that the author probably forgot to lay out clear distribution rules for this beta version. The background was apparently that he was overwhelmed by the sheer number of e-mail requests for beta-testing the new engine and so he decided - rather than to plough through the 200 requests - to kill off these requests more efficiently by offering the limited download. Without clear rules unfortunately ....
At least this is the impression I got based on CCC posts.

Quoting the author, from the download:

-------------

Beta Distribution

We ask that the beta releases not be circulated except in cases where special permission was given, as it was for example to all of the members of the CEGT test team. Those interested in becoming beta testers are asked to please contact us directly to get a copy.

-------------

And why have Leo stop the download after one day if he was willing to have people keep trading it?

That said, I'm sure no one will come after you if you do send it to someone. The author has had ample opportunity to complain about requests for copies in the CCC but has not done so.
