The autoexec.nt and/or config.nt files in your c:\windows\system32 folder have been deleted (probably by a virus or whatever).

You may find backups in c:\windows\repair or else just copy them from another WinXp PC.

That will fix it - provided you don't still have the virus still lurking.

I suggest scanning your PC with a good AV. Avast is a good free one.

Then download Adaware http://www.lavasoft.de/ and Spybot S & D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html and run those after downloading the latest updates.

i had this problem before when i was new to xp.
i had to har dreformay the whole drive.
most of my files were saved but it was a real mess.
i think this will work though.
1.turn off system restore.
2.run virus and adware scans.
(bit defender has a online virus scan, there sre otheres,do gooble search free online scan)
3.do repair windows or replace the missing or much more likly coorupted files.
4.reboot.turn system restore back on.
