My "Grand" collection of pgn databases has been substantially updated. It is a free download. It features human-human long time-control games played over-the-board and separated into time periods. Filtered out (as best as possible based on information in the tags) are short time games, blindfold, correspondence, simultaneous, exhibition, and playoff games. Duplicate and near-duplicate games, and games with 25 moves or less were filtered out using utility programs. Player names have been consolidated where it seemed reasonable that two similar names were for the same player.

I added a new file, GM2600.pgn. Games of players 2600+ elo, long time-control games over-the-board, from 1981 through 2007. Minimum 51 ply, no duplicates, no correspondence, no rapid/blitz/blindfold, no exhibition, no simultaneous, no playoff.

There are 17987 games and 269 players.

This file might be useful for making opening books.

I'm looking for a chess program or tool that can search for games in a pgn database where a white or a black move has a certain count off informant symbol, (like ?,??,!,!!).

With chessbase 10 it is possible to search for games with a certain count off informant symbol, but it is not possible to specify if the annotation belongs to a white move or a black move.

I also own chess assistant 9.1, but I don't think it's possible with this version.

Do you know off any program or tool where I can do such a count off search with?

I want this function to use with a created pgn file from an opening book file, from chessmaster 9000, created with OBK2PGN.

There are many other annotation symbols besides the ones you mentioned. Also there are NAGs which provide numerous annotation possibilities.

A pgn file can be searched using the free software SCID and games extracted containing the symbols you specify. However I do NOT know of any program that can separate the games based on whether it was a white move or black move that contained the annotation. And what if there are multiple annotations in a game, some from white moves and some from black moves?

SCID is a database manager and requires the pgn file to first be imported to scid format. After the search, the result can be exported to pgn format. SCID is a little complicated to use, but it is extremely useful and worth the effort to learn.

Another possibility is to load the pgn file into a good test editor like notepad2, and manually search, copy and paste into another pgn file.

I have find a way to search for games in a pgn database where a white or a black move has a certain count off informant symbol, (like ?,??,!,!!).

I did it with some pgn utility called LGPGNMW, witch can be downloaded here: http://chessbazaar.mylivepage.com/file/ ... _utilities.
This utility can ad a informant symbol to every white or every black move, like desired in a pgn file.
Together with some search and replace tricks with UltraEdit I came to a good result.
