Dear Sirs,

There is a discussion about bundling Winboard gui with various software which would make it easy for the user to use the gui right out of the box.

There is a universe of new computer chess addicts out there and there is no way that we should be prevented from tapping into that profitable market, make some money and dominate the world.

Ah, wrong speech. So sorry about that.

The main point is that by bundling the various add ons that make Winboard what it is - an extraordinarily flexible and awesome gui - the new users (and dare I say it, some not so new users) would find it easier to use Winboard than if they had to go look for each piece in a different location, different forum etc.

You can help by giving your explicit permission to have your software bundled and the bundle hosted right here at the WB Forum.

Your bundle would be a part of an evolving Winboard project started by Tim Mann, continued by Alessandro Scotti and driven fanatically by H.G. Mueller at the current time.

Make some newbie happy today and say yes.

My name is Roger Brown and I approved this message.

Later.

Followings are the nice utilities to bundle with WinBoard, which is developed by Alex Guerrero.

1 ) Polyglot GUI - easy way make "polyglot.ini" file.
2) WinMAN - WinBoard Manger easy way to install new chess engine.

Both utilities are available at:
http://es.geocities.com/winboard_chess/

Thanks to Alex Guerrero for nice utilities making job easy.

I am solidly with you on your choices but the author has made it clear that he does not wish his excellent programs to be part of any bundle at this time.

I quite agree that they would make excellent additions. His site is not so difficult to find though so I guess that will have to do, for now.

There are also legal problems: as I understood it, it is not possible to bundle something together with software that falls under the GPL without it becoming subject to the GPL as well. And the GPL specifies that this means you have to supply the source code as well. If you cannot do that, it would count as a copyright infringement of the included GPL'ed software, for which the holders of those copyrights (in this case the Free Software Foundation) will sue you.

It would in theory be possible to include an installer, though, which would download all necessary files that could not be included, and copy them to their intended folders.

H.G,

If I want to distribute Winboard F in a pack, now I know to ask permission from the author. With the permission of the author can be done as indicated by the license.

But who is the author of Winboard F?

The original author Tim Mann, Alexandro Scotti or HG?

Are the three authors?

Do I have to ask permission to 3?

Winboard is GPL. No need to ask permission. Just include the source code.
