Naum for Palm with Chess960 support

Not really a Winboard topic, but it is related to the existing winboard engine. Hope that counts :)

I stopped working on the Palm version (small number of people are interested in it), but I couldn't resist adding the Chess960 support.

So the new Palm version is still old 1.8 engine, but with FRC support. It probably won't be playing very good, because its eval assumes that pieces are on their regular starting squares, but this doesn't seem to cause any crashes - OK maybe one or two

BTW, I will probably release the new (probably final) version after the Mainz tournament.

Hi Alex :)

Many thanks for the latest Palm version of Naum, I look forward to trying this out. I for one am an interested user (hopefully not the only one!) and play Palm Naum regularly in my lunchbreak! :)

Does this mean you will not now be releasing an optimised version of Naum which was planned? (hopefully not!).

Many thanks again

Best wishes

Hi Chris,

Last year I was thinking about adding ARM support and creating an optimized version, but I was so dissapointed by the number of downloads that I decided not to do it. I am not all that interested in ARM programming, so I need a motivation to study it.
I plan to quit computer chess anyway, so there probably won't be a new Palm version (I may need to check-in to the Betty Ford clinic to do it, but I'm gonna try :) )

Regards,
Alex

You are still going to Mainz in August, I hope? We'll do our best to make you reconsider your decision.

Seriously, I'm considering to quit or take a long break, too. Unfortunately, it isn't easy. I hadn't heard about the Betty Ford Center before, but it seems to be exactly what I need. Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, it looks a bit too expensive for me.

Hi Steve, Shaun and Tord,

I will probably continue doing some work on the engine, but it won't be much. If I stumble upon some great new improvement, I may publish a new version. I am making some changes in my life, probably starting a family soon, so there will be no time for chess.

I may switch to a brand new field of medicine and open a computer chess addiction clinic :)

Tord, I will see you in Mainz. You may become my first patient, but I don't think these guys wish that you get cured :)

I am surprised if there has been a lack of interest and disappointed for you, because Palm Naum is an excellent program as well as being available for free! Perhaps I need to make some multiple downloads :)

This would be a sad loss to the community if you were to give up entirely, though understandable (my wife thinks I need putting away somewhere more permanently, so I may join you  ). In the meantime, if you need any CPU time for Naum specifically, just let me know. :)

Best wishes

That's an acceptable excuse. Congratulations. :D

What a great business idea! I wonder why nobody has thought of it before.

Tord, I will see you in Mainz.

Cool! :)

Looks like it will be even more fun than last year.

You may become my first patient, but I don't think these guys wish that you get cured :)

Until you have demonstrated your ability to quit yourself, I'm not sure I trust your ability to help others.

I have some hope that I will manage to quit (or at least take a break from) computer chess without any help from others this autumn. My computer chess addiction started when I left my old Lisp job and returned to the university to do pure mathematics (basically a pen, paper, chalk and blackboard job, without any heavy use of computers). This autumn I am going back to another (more interesting and much better paid) Lisp job, and I don't think I will have much desire to spend more time in front of a computer when I get home from work in the evenings.

Hi Alex, :)

I saw your message after posting my own - there are just a few things more important than chess - congratulations! :)

Thanks, but it's still too early for congratulations.
I still have to do some hard romancing this summer :)

Tord, trust me, few weeks of electro-shock therapy in my clinic and you will be a brand new man

Hello,

this is great news to get a FRC version ! I was awaiting a FRC engine on my palm for a long time !

thanks again !

of course i am disapointed with th new of Palm Naum project's end ... But i thanks you for this interesting engine , and the job performed !

I have already made some tournaments with Naum with other engines ( and a greater amount of game vs it) , and on a zire 21 ; his level seems to be near 1800! good result with a not ARM engine !

regards

Nicolas
