Fairy-Max binary distribution for Linux available

I learned how to make Debian packages, and forged one for Fairy-Max.

It contains three binaries that install in /usr/games/, namely fairymax, shamax and maxqi. The latter two are dedicated versions of Fairy-Max, optimized to play Shatranj and Xiangqi, respectively. A man page for "fairymax" is included. The regular Fairy-Max supports 8 other variants (including normal Chess).

The package can be downloaded from http://home.hccnet.nl/h.g.muller/fairym ... 1_i386.deb (for now).

..."i386.deb"...

Of course I get an "wrong architecture" error here on 64 bit Linux. Would it be possible...?

64-bit Linux cannot handle 32-bit binaries???

Unfortunately I have no 64-bit system. If you can open the package with an archiver, though, the data tar ball in it contains sources in usr/share/doc/fairymax, plus a README file that tells you how compile them.(Quite trivial, as these are single-sorce-file projects.)

According to Ilari:
"Installing the ia32-libs package solves most of these problems."

Even though 32-bit applications work on 64-bit Linux, your package manager won't normally let you install packages that are meant for i386. So what you can do is force the install by running "sudo dpkg --force-architecture -i package.deb".

Arrgh, of course you are right. I did that often with other packages. It seems I'm getting to lazy and expect that everything works as expected just by clicking on it.

Thanks for the program.

Note there is a new version of this package, which fixes an under-promotion bug:

http://home.hccnet.nl/h.g.muller/fairym ... 2_i386.deb .
