Mouse wheel

Postby JMand » 09 Apr 2010, 12:46

Hi all,

I have a question for newbies: I'd like to invert the moves made by the mouse wheel: is that possible ?

Turn it the other way? :D

Frankly, I have no idea what you are asking...

Hehe... :D

Well, I mean, in Chessb*se, you have to scroll down the whell to go forward the moves in a game. But in Winboard, it's the opposite: the scolling is inverted (you have to scroll up to go forward in the game). Is there a possiblity to invert that parameter ?

Ah, OK, now I understand. Currently there is no parameter to control that. I have no idea why this particular choice was made for the direction, it seems inconvenient to have no standard for it. I could add an option -invertMouseWheel true|false to make it user configurable, in future versions. How do other GUIs than ChessBase and WinBoard handle this? Is there a de-facto standard?

As far as I can see, Convekta's Aquarium has the same behaviour than Chessbase.

I use Winboard 4.4.2b and it seems inverted with all other chess software I use :
BabasChess, Chessbase Light and arena (I don't use this one but I've tested it) all have inverted mouse wheel compared to winboard.

I feel more natural with the way the other software use the mouse wheel since when you read, say an e-book or webpage, you go forward in the text by scrolling down the wheel (like the way you read a paper : up to down).

Well, it would be totally trivial to flip the behavior. If all other GUIs do it the other way around, I probably should not even make it subject to an option.

Anyway thank you if you set up this feature in Winboard.
