Editing position and bringing pieces back onto the board

Hello :)

When editing a position initially or even when playing out a game manually in edit mode, I may make a mistake in the initial set up of the position or while moving pieces later

But if a piece has been taken off the board for any reason (dragged off by mistake or taken), and I want to go back on what I did, how to I get the "missing" piece back.

In other words, i can drag or take pieces off the board but not insert or drag them back onto the board

I did notice that a right click on an empty square can create a pawn, but what if I need another piece back on the board

This means as soon as I make a mistake, I have to start all over again setting up the pieces and the position I wanted.

Thanks for any help

If you move the mouse vertically after pressing the right button, the piece will cycle through all possible choices. And you can then release once you see the piece you wanted. The Pawn is merely the first choice (because it is needed the most often).

Thanks

That even solved my next problem which was how to get a black pawn (or other piece) back onto the board

To speed that up you can also keep Shift pressed while clicking. XBoard originally used the right button for white pieces, and the middle button for black pieces, and Shift was a general signal to swap the meaning of those buttons.

Once you created a piece of a certain type you can duplicate it by moving it with Ctrl pressed.
