Winboard 4.5.2 for blind: installing Sjaak II

Postby claudgaran » 15 Dec 2020, 15:54

Hi all! I'm a totally blind user of Winboard and its last accessible version. I would like to install the Sjaak II engin for playing some chess variants. I've tryed to modify the winboard .ini file so that the engin could be found eather in the first or in the second engin list but then I can't play against it. Also, I can't find any variants but in the variants.txt file that's in the engin folder, there are plenty of those. So, how can I use this engin with Winboard? Thanks for all your help and sorry for my English. Bye for now!

Sorry for the late response; I did not visit here much in December, and totally overlooked your message.

If you got Sjaak II in the first engine list, you should be able to select it from the comboboxes in WinBoard's Startup Dialog. If that doesn't work, please post here the exact line you added to the engine list, so that I can see whether there is anything wrong with it.

If you managed to start WinBoard with Sjaak II as the first engine, it would initially be set to play normal Chess. To select another variant, you should operate WinBoard's New Variant menu. This opens a dialog with a number of radio buttons to select a variant. It shows all standard variants (i.e. those that WinBoard knows), but only the buttons for variants that Sjaak II also plays will be enabled. After selecting the variant, everything should work as it does for normal chess.
