I found one at https://portableapps.com/apps/games/winboard_portable

but not sure if it is safe and legit to use

seems like there's no official winboard portable available out there, but can't hurt to make sure.

Hello! There is this package: WinBoard-AA.zip

I have it on a USB key. As far as I remember, it works perfectly, without special precaution.

I have a command file named winboard.cmd with this line:

Code: Select all
@%~d0\applications\echecs\winboard-aa\winboard\winboard.exe %*

I can paste it anywhere on my key and use it to start WinBoard.

WinBoard is intrinsically portable. In the binary installer of WinBoard 4.8 I configured it to put the user settings file (where settings are saved) in the user's AppData folder, though, to make sure every user of a Windows system would have his own settings, and wouldn't spoil settings of another user. For a portable package it would be more logical to store the user settings in the WinBoard folder itself.

I happen to be working on a new release of WinBoard (4.9.4?). This will probably be done as a portable package. A beta version of that (especially tailored to the needs of blind people) can be found at http://hgm.nubati.net/WinBoard-4.9.a.zip .
