Spike 1.2 Turin (linux single version) on Ct DVD

Postby Volker Böhm » 27 Nov 2006, 19:46

Hi,

currently there is a magazin containing the linux single version of Spike 1.2 Turin (on DVD). The magazine is called "Ct" (www.heise.de) a very popular computer magazine in germany. It is availiable within the two weeks, starting this monday.

We agreed with the magazine to not deliver Spike 1.2 Turin linux single version otherwise for two month.

I already went to the city to buy it. I learned this way that c't is delivered with some delay to Switzerland :-). I guess (and hope) one or two days only. Together with Shredder on it this DVD is a "must have" (YMMV).

And of course there is a very good Linux distribution on it!

Penguins go!

Finally got it. It seems to play as good as the Windows version which can be used with wine.

IIRC the Windows version plays FRC only in UCI mode? This version plays FRC and normal chess as xboard engine (using Tord's version). That seems a bit strange because it doesn't send a "variants" command to xboard at all. But it switches to FRC mode when it gets the FEN string from xboard at startup.

I noticed I have to create the SpikePosLearn.txt file before I can use it. If it isn't present the engine crashes.

Shredder from the same DVD is Shredder 6 in fact with some limitations: impossible to change the engine, no adjustement of playing strength. However, you get a very strong chess program for a few euros. Although I think the engine coming with the "ShredderClassic" Linux version is a much better "buy". I recommend everyone to take a look at that engine. In addition it also plays FRC.

Hi Volker,

thanks for this post. Spike does support frc in uci and winboard. Indeed I never tested Spike with winboard in frc mode, I will check to send the corrent variant command.

The "SpikePosLearn.txt" problem is very strange as I haven´t recognized it at my linux system. Hmm. Will take a look at this problem.
