I've edited and rewitten Aaron Tay's original guide. I'm requesting additions, corrections, and arguments for differences of opinion. Any reasonable addition/correction will be added to the guide. Just so you know: all comments enclosed in square brackets are my own. Blame me and no one else for those opinions!

This is just the first article in what will become the new home of the Winboard FAQ. BTW, the Winboard FAQ is not ready yet. There is still much work to be done. Are there any Winboarder writers/proofreaders/suggestors out there who want to help in this project? All contributors will receive full credit for their work.

Wow, I did not realize that there were so many private engines, it sure adds up dont it? There is an engine named Dirty 0.1 which is a combined efford from Pradu(buzz) and Andres (Eveann).

Yes it looks very good. However, if I compare the private engine list with the list of engines freely available (and having all the other nice developements in mind) I really ask me how long I'll be interested in computer chess.

I'll release it when I'm convinced I've made enough progress. Another 10 points will do it. I'm at a point where I'm trying idea after idea and each one of them is either failing miserably or having no effect on results. Although my internal version is 4.3.170 I'm uncertain of any true progress since 4.3.144. That's 26 straight unfruitful changes!

Now, that's news. Alaric will become a favorite among blitz lovers rather quick, there arent many others who can do the tango with Crafty.

To Ron, may be you should Remove Eugen...El Chinito, a newer engine from the same author turned out to be a crafty clone.

To Ron, may be you should Remove Eugen...El Chinito, a newer engine from the same author turned out to be a crafty clone.

I guess you also have to add Anaconda, Bodo and The Baron,
because you also added Ikarus, which wasn't private
in the past, but is nowadays as all others mentioned above.

If I would think it over I could probably come up with
several more.

Eugen has been removed from the Private Engines List. Alaric will be removed this weekend.

I don't mind programming the changes. I've got lots more ideas than I can possibly code. It's waiting for all those test games to prove my ideas wrong that hurts.

Why Tony? ...because he's the one who started me on this Private Engines List! I took over the Winboard FAQ and discovered through Tony that the Private Engine List was always part of the old site. I felt I needed an updated list for the new site.

Thanks for the additional engines, Guenther. Do you have information as to author and country?

I'm not going to add The Baron because Richard said he would do delayed public releases. Did he change his mind?

Small mistake by Guenther, ETChess is freely available.

What's the point of listing an older program from a programer when a newer version is available? Do you ever think that they would care to dig up the old source code for us? Mridul said that he no longer even have the code of Ceng, he had told Leo that he would be sending him a new version, but that was a while back.

It's just about the rules for listing.
For really private programs we neither know if the programmer
still has the source, nor when he touched it the last time.

So what? What do you think is the reason for this list at all?
Why do you think anyone of them will dig out the source
for 'us'? A list is just a list or what do you think
Either it has some rules or not...
I could have also listed private programs I know they
are clones. Actually I don't understand your problem?
