My information was gathered from web searches. Many of the engines were identified as clones, but I couldn't find which engine they were based on. For Patriot I remember that it was a Crafty clone.

Gridchess, eh? That's a tough one. I'm reluctant to accuse a university project of being a clone. I don't believe that they misrepresented themselves. They added parallelization code to Fruit and that was original work. If you look at the Paderborn 2006 results http://wwwcs.uni-paderborn.de/~IPCCC/IP ... _2006.html you can see that the engine was not disqualified.

I want to list engines that were misrepresented as original works but were merely hex-edited copies of genuine engines. If I listed all engines based on others the list would be almost endless.

Great work!

This list is very useful to new people. There are some clone engines used in tournaments and not available (obviously) and these people dont know where can download it, if it possible.

This list complete with your other list (private engines) and freeware list (Leo) almost engines Winboard/UCI that exists.

I can see Patriot appeared on your list. However, the cloner is from Belarus, not Russia. BTW, I have mixed feelings about including the cloners' nationality in the list - it may suggest that their country is also guilty.

I corrected the country name to Belarus.

I have seen too many clones in regional matchups. For example should ElChinito represent Spain or France? I don't think that's right.

You thought of it, so the clone list is your idea! The private engine list was Tony Thomas's idea. I'm not the guy with the ideas, I'm the guy who does a little bit of research, asks for help, and then puts some information onto a website.

That's right. Patriot originally was a Crafty clone, but later versions were Fruit.
