Fun list suggestion for Ron

Hi Ron,

A history of top ten engines:

1.) year first released

2.) year entered top ten

3.) last year fell out of top ten

4.) last year fell out of top 40

5.) year of last release

Well it would be a lot of work and rather subjective and provide endless debate, but also could be lots of fun and very interesting!

I also admit that I would not want to do it!

Guenther can make a list like that faster than anyone else, as he is the one of the few that I know of who keeps up with the dates and runs an own tournament with engines of all strength.

Hi Mike,

That sounds like a very hard thing to do. The rating list sites always show the current best, not always the historical best. But what's your definition of "best"? Is it Ridderkerk top 10, RWBC top 10, or some other list? Like you say: it's too subjective. I'll leave your idea for someone else to pursue.

Hi Michael,

I like your idea very much. Indeed it is more or less what I am trying to do with my dinosaur league. I had posted about it asking and receiving advices last november in the tournament forum, but I cant' find the thread anymore. Anyway, I should post more this summer. More than 16000 games have already been played since last december. But of course, it will only reflect the hierarchy under my conditions of play

On the other hand, I am also into the time consuming task of determining the versions avalaible at the end of each year for all programms since 1998 and some may be interested in reading and improving it. From this list others could try to make rating calculations based on already played tournaments. Is there some collective database available ? When CEGT and CCRL have started ? Is there earlier reliable sources avaible ? Of course, in this logic, the more the merrier ! :D

Best wishes.
