News: Private/Clone Engine List, and New Winboard FAQ

Postby Ron Murawski » 24 Mar 2008, 22:11

The Private Engine List and the Clone Engine List have been recently updated. Please check to see if I've left something out or got something wrong. All corrections are welcome!

I've also done a small amount of work on the new Winboard FAQ. If anyone has any corrections or suggestions, please let me know.

http://computer-chess.org/pmwiki.php?n= ... EngineList
http://computer-chess.org/pmwiki.php?n=Main.WinboardFAQ

There's also a beginner's guide to running tournaments
http://computer-chess.org/pmwiki.php?n= ... ournaments
Aaron Tay wrote the original beginner's guide. The current version has been modernized and expanded.

I need a volunteer for writing a section about playing Suicide Chess, Fischer Random, and other variants. Send me a PM if you are interested.

If anyone is interested in writing an article about computer chess I will publish it for you on the computer-chess.org website.

Her is something I cant seem to understand. Cerebro is a highly private engine, and there are so many clones of it. I wonder why?? Also, Ikarus competed in CCT-10 this year, so it was active this year..Also, Chompster competed in the australian computer tournamnent in 2006 if I am not mistaken.
What more can I say?

Links:
- Patrick Buchmann's website is mainly about UCI engines and Arena books
- Alex Schmidts's website is inactive (advertisements only)
- hgm's site may be added for sipport of variants using winboard

Sites which don't link back => trash

That's a very good question!

The links page has been updated. Thanks!

I really should finish adding all the other links. They are listed in plain text, but are not highlighted links. Maybe I will work on that in the next several days.

If I did that I would have very few links! I really don't care about the link-backs. I have no patience for wars over UCI vs Winboard or Arena vs Winboard. If a UCI/Arena guy wants to ignore the site that's okay. As long as the site is helpful to a computer chess beginner, that's all I care about.

I heard about a russian engine with Multi-core capability a while back, I think it was called Axon or something. It played against a GM or something, I dont remember the name of the author. However, I can tell you that Djordje was one of the testers.

Achilles/Axon by Vladan Vuckovic (Serbia). I am in contact with him, and he is not interested in engines vs engines tournaments at the moment.

The match was vs GM Igor Miladinovic : http://chess.elfak.ni.ac.yu/

Yes, you are right. Most of that discussion had another hidden topic anyway.

Maybe there are some who most likely will never understand. I don't care about them. See the "Why so quiet" thread.

You will find a few more private engines if you look closely at the list of participants of OpenWar 4th Edition

About clones : I receive one or two of them each month. Author names are phony of course, and I think there is no need to list private clones.

There's more private engines in your list than I thought. I added: Anatoli, Brainless, Caligula, CTD, Oxygen, and RBrChess. Did I get them right? Thanks!

You may add as well XyclOps by Norman Schmidt (Belgium/USA) that is currently playing in my E group.

Hi Ron,

If I am not misstaken my RWBC page or at least the chronology pages
about all available WB/UCI engines are not listed in your links page?

edit: I see now that RWBC appears under 'tournaments and ratings',
but only at the horizonchess site and the the link is outdated too.
Moreover I think at least the anthology pages(fka chronology pages)
qualify for the category of general interest. Thre is also a download
section at RWBC which holds downloads for WB engines which are
not available anymore from their authors.

Hi Guenther,

Your site is very helpful and deserves to be listed. I apologize for not listing it in more places. At the moment I am (slowly) adding/editing/removing information to the links page to make it more current. I only have a couple of hours a week to spend on the FAQ site. Sometimes I forget about the site and don't I update it for months at a time. That's why updating is so slow! (I'm still looking for volunteers to help me add content to the site!)

BTW, your Winboard chronology page is mentioned in section [A.4] of the new Winboard FAQ, "What are Winboard engines? How many Winboard engines are there?"
http://computer-chess.org/pmwiki.php?n= ... ardEngines

Also, I had no idea that you had a download page for unavailable engines. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

Rest assured that I will add your site to my links page!

Best regards,
Ron

Hello Ron,

Thanks for the infos and for correcting/updating the links to RWBC.
There is no need for any apology, I haven't much time for computerchess
myself currently and I understand that there are circumstances when
it runs on low priority ;-)

Best wishes,
Guenther

P.S.- Hopefully I can sometimes test the relatively new 4.4 version of Horizon...
