Bruce Moreland pages?

Hi,

does anyone know where the Bruce Moreland pages have gone? Both known links (brucemo.com, seanet.com) seem to be dead :(
At least the "seanet.com" link had been working a while ago. The other one is still listed in this forum under "Theory and Programming".

A severe loss it seems. The pages are still in the archives (does sometone know how long these archives will exist?):

I'm going to update the links in the next days.

AFAIK they plan to archive the web for future generations. At least I think they don't delete material once it is archived. But who can tell how long they will exist?

According to my knowledge they are the only publically available web archive. (I would assume for orginisations like Google or NSA archives are useful enough that they have them. But that does not help us.

While the Bruce Moreland pages topic is up here I'll mention a curiosity I noticed back in February when I saved the pages from the archive site.

On each index page that the archive saved for the Bruce Moreland programming pages, the very first topic heading listed is: Basic Search Techniques and the first listing under that heading is: Search Tree Introduction

The link given in the archive for Search Tree Introduction goes to this page.

http://web.archive.org/web/200305261137 ... g/time.htm

As far as I can tell the Search Tree Introduction link should have been this one.

The link at the Useful Links (viewtopic.php?f=22&t=49943) section of this forum already points to this archive.

I know of some old chess related material that can be easily found on the web archive site. Yet the author of those very pages gets strangely irritated if people share those pages with others (downloaded saved pages).

As Olivier has noted there are links to the web archive copy.

You asked for a offline copy I tried to help. I don't know if you had the same trouble as I did with using the online web archive copy of the Moreland pages, the pages loading slowly. Which is one of the reasons I saved an offline copy of the pages in the first place.

The Winboard forum owner's make the decision though. If they have no problem with the download link being posted here you can do that. They aren't my pages.

BTW, Anyone know what came of Bruce Moreland?

Hello Charles

I have no problem if this download link is posted on this forum. As you said this material is available on the web anyway.

Today someone let me know that the above download link for the saved Bruce Moreland pages was no longer working. This is the new download link.

http://www.2shared.com/file/LdcQFNO3/pages.html

I am wanting to take a long break from the Internet so in the future if the above link doesn't work it might be best to ask for a copy of the pages in this thread. Then maybe someone that did download them might be willing to upload the pages for the person wanting them. There is an info.txt file in the above zip file with the date of March 8, 2011 in it. If asking for the pages in the future best to look for the copy that has that date.

Many thanks Charles.

I have saved the file, and I can still make it available on this forum if needed.

I have rewritten a post that I posted here a few days ago. This is the rewrite.

There are two graphics missing on the Nolot 02 page that is in the BruceMoreland.zip file that Olivier has made available for download in his above post. The two missing files can be downloaded below should they be wanted.

Though the two below files are not from the archive.org website and are not genuine Bruce Moreland files, they should both be visually accurate as to what appeared on Bruce Moreland's website.

The first file is the nolot02.gif chessboard graphic.

Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

The graphic goes in the 'nolot' directory (overwriting the existing nolot02.gif file). The path is:
Code: Select all
www.brucemo.com\compchess\nolot

The second file is the nolot02.htm_cmp_zero-plus-one110_bnr.gif (Nolot 02) title graphic.

Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

The graphic goes in the '_derived' directory (overwriting the existing file). The path is:
Code: Select all
www.brucemo.com\compchess\nolot\_derived

Before saving the above renamethis.gif file to the \nolot\_derived directory, the file needs to be renamed to:

Code: Select all
nolot02.htm_cmp_zero-plus-one110_bnr.gif

Imageshack would not upload the gif file with its original name so it was uploaded as renamethis.gif.

**********************************************************
Notes:

Chess Assistant Light was used to make the nolot02.gif chessboard graphic.

http://www.convekta.com/download.htm

I have no idea what was used to make the Nolot title graphics on Bruce Moreland's website. So the Nolot 02 title graphic was made as below.

In my browser the web archive shows the wording "Nolot 02" next to a broken/missing image graphic.

http://web.archive.org/web/200610131816 ... olot02.htm

Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

A screenshot in tiff format was made of the "Nolot 02" wording that is on the archive.org page. Then taking a copy of the 'Nolot 01' title file and converting it from gif to tiff format, and removing the numeral 1, the Nolot 02 screenshot graphic was stitched over the "Nolot 0" wording and then this stitched graphic was saved as a gif file.

The below screenshot shows the 'Nolot 02' archive.org screenshot and the 'Nolot 01' file copy (with the 1 removed) opened in an image editor.

Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

This graphic shows the 'Nolot 02' screenshot being moved over the 'Nolot 0' wording of the other file.

Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

The final graphic shows that the "Nolot 0" wording of both graphics lined up perfectly. So it is safe to assume I think that the numeral 2 is also correct as to how it appeared in the original (missing) graphic. The "overlap transparency" setting in the below graphic was changed from 50 to 0 so that the numeral 2 would appear white and not hazy.
