winboard fail in detecting errors in pgn file

Postby Uri Blass » 26 Nov 2004, 15:13

I download the following game from Dan Corbit's site and modified it to have illegal moves.

Winboard does not detect 11.hxg3 as illegal and the pawn g3 disappear from the board with no other changes after 11.hxg3(for some reason it shows h2xg3 when there is no pawn at h2 in the board).

Later winboard fails to detect 41...Kb3 as illegal and also does not detect 42.Ra6+ as illegal (there is no check).
Only when black tries to play another illegal move(42..a2)

Hi Uri,

In Winboard set on the following:

Yes for some reason it was not set(I think that I decided to save time for blitz games so I changed it like other things that are not needed as animation).

I see that winboard has no problem in the posted game with test legality.

I think that test legality should be used always for posting pgn because not using test legality should be relevant only for games if a player want to cheat and not for posting games(alternatively if there is no full notation of illegal moves in the pgn winboard should test legality of it).
