Since the protocol of cbv-format (which is simply a packed cbh/cbg file) is not public availabe, you?ll certainly not find such a conversion tool. :(

But of course: if you have ChessBase or Fritz, you can convert such a cbh-database to a pgn-database!

Franz.

There is a conversion tool that you can buy from chessbase(Fritz8 and I guess that also other engines).

I choose a database
chooose select all
choose edit->copy

choose file->new database and create pgn files

I copy all the games by paste to the pgn file and I have games in pgn that were previously in cbh.

Chessbase Light will convert it, but only up to 8000 games.

CBV can be converted to PGN with a DOS utility CB2PGN (put cb2pgn.exe and the cbv files in the same folder and press cb2pgn, it asks you the file names and then creates the pgn file.

I think that only works on the decompressed files.

Actually, the original post about Fritz is a pretty good idea. You can get a cheap older version for a song, and then convert all the CBV files you want.

For example, $23 for Fritz 7 here:

Plus, you get a pretty good chess program (even though you have made a donation to the evil empire and gone over to the dark side of the force).

Of course this utility does NOT convert cbv-files (and also not cbg/cbh) -
it can only be used for the quite old cbf-format!

Now please don't slap me if this is warez, (I don't think it is) but German expert PC magazine is offering Fritz 5.32 for free download (or coverdisk if you buy the magazine)

http://www.pcgo.de/aktuell/ausgabe0103/fritz.zip

Now I know it can load cbv files, not sure about exporting them though.
