Winboard and Linux

Postby Kurt Utzinger » 26 May 2008, 13:36

Hi experts

Does Winboard (XBoard) run under Linux? I intend to install Winboard
on an "ASUS EeePC 900, 8.9" Display, white, CHC" Netbook.

And furthermore: is Shredder the strongest chess engine
running under Linux.

Kind regards
Kurt

Hello Kurt,

Welcome back!

I suspect that you and Volker need to compare notes.

He has made the move to that OS and he has experienced every sort of issue with various engines.

The strength issue is difficult to assess in the absence of a database of games...as you would appreciate.

Again perhaps Volker could help as I believe he has a test running.

Later.

It runs excellent under that OS.

Using xboard if you are new to linux may look a bit strange at first. If you use the package managment system of your linux distrubution (what is recommended) it runs totally unconfigured and will most likely crash.

Reasons are easy to find: GNUChess is missing and xboard starts without any configuration. That means a gigantic board will be displayed without much use. However if you once get the idea how to handle that it is easy and fast to change engines, size, time control and so on. Maybe you can contact me by PM because its easier for me to explain in German.

It is certainly among the strongest. You can also try a windows executable with the help of wine. But my experience with that setup is that the engine will hang after unpredictable number of games.

Hi Volker
Many thanks in advance for any help you can give me. The ASUS
mini-notebook I ordered will mainly be used in my garden for checking
my emails und the chess forums and for working with documents but I
will surely also have some chess engines on the Linux OS
Kind regards
Kurt
